The Upper Room Prayer Meeting · 12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. 13 And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. 14 These all continued with one [d]accord in prayer [e]and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. Here they are now back in Jerusalem the city where Christ was tried and found to be a blasphemer. This is also where the Mt of olives was cleaved in two. And the Robe was split into from top to bottom, showing the Lord was getting ready to start a new Kingdom on earth. So, they the Disciples and Mary the Mother of the Lord and other believers such as the 70 Apostle are gathered in the upper room a private house where the Lord served communion at Passover. So, we see 120 gathered to wait upon the Lord giving themselves to praying. They were in trouble as sheep among wolves, so were in need of help to silence all cares and fears. They are now faced with great work without the presence of Jesus who really bore most of the burdens. Remember Christ prayed for them, now they are praying to God for His Spirit He promised them. They remember The Spirit descended upon our Saviour when he was praying, Luke 3:21. When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. When we gather in His name we come in a bend or frame work of receiving from the Lord His quickening and empowerment to be what He created us to be as they continued in prayer. How long we do not know, but until the Lord intervenes and they do not faint and give up. When we are needing relief, we do not care about time, but continue to praise the Lord for what He is doing now. We know his grace and mercy are going to minister to us as we are in one accord in holy Love. No quarreling no discord but united in purpose. Matthias Chosen 15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the [f]disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred and twenty), and said, 16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; 17 for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry.” 18 (Now this man purchased a field with the [g]wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his [h]entrails gushed out. 19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘Let his dwelling place be [i]desolate, And let no one live in it’; And let no one live in it’; and, ‘Let another take his [j]office.’21 “Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”23 And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 25 to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” 26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles. The sin of Judas was not only shame and ruin, but left a vacancy among the number of Apostles. 12 was the number of Tribes in Israel as they were also the 12 Stars and crowns Of Rev. 12:1 Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars.
One needs to see the organization the Lord began and wants to continue, so the choice for those that were gathered among the thousand of believers. This was the beginning of 120 gathered to witness God promised messiah. Notice there where thousands in Jerusalem to witness the beginning of the Church. They were the mustard seed that was going to grow until Jesus return for His bride the Church. This Man Peter who denied the Lord is now seen as thee Rock the Lord said he would become. He is not sitting down but standing up giving an account of the death of Judas. Who was numbered as one of them but did not partake of the Spirit of Christ invested to him of God nature of love. He was seen as an aggravation full of sin that lead to his ruin. We are living in a world that is aggravated with the Lord and God is going to reveal them by His Holy Spirit. God wants us to honor and adore Him. We are seeing yet today ringleaders in sin are the worst of sinners as they are guiding Churches with selfishness and not Godliness. Here he took and guided the enemies to where the Lord was praying and he not only lost his money by throwing it back at them he went out and hung himself committing suicide. To top it off they purchased the land he committed suicide for 30 pieces of silver as a cemetery. He did not purchase the field but the wages of his sin did. The wages of sin, is always death. He lost his money shamefully and went his way shamefully in despair and suffocated himself with grief and horror falling head long on his face with a swelling of his breast and the violence of his fall he burst asunder in the mist, so all his bowels tumbled out as if the devil Dr Luke say Bowelling is a part of the punishment of traitors. Justly do those bowels gush our that were shut up against the Lord Jesus. Matthew 24: 51 and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Notice this was known to all those who dwelt in Jerusalem as if it was put in the new paper or on TV so all knew of the remarkable judgement of God upon him that betrayed his master Act 1:19 And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.) Yet there hearts where harden and only the Spirit in the words of God could reveal Gods love, mercy and grace. God sent His Son Jesus to pay for the sins of the world, when we accept abiding in the vine Jesus. God fulfilled Scripture when he said in Acts 1:16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; Let’s not be surprised nor stumble about the 12 Disciples and how they all ate of the Passover together but Judas lifted his heel against Jesus the Messiah and distanced himself from them. Job 18:14 and 15 talks about his confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and shall be scattered upon his habitation. Peter was assuring the Church unbelief of man shall not make the promises of God of no effect. Judas was hanged his bishop or his office is lost. We are going to see branches broken off and other grafted in Romans 11:17 And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and [a]fatness of the olive tree. The Church will never lose for want of a witness. It was important they choose another to fulfill the place of Judas. This person had to be a person had a personal relationship with the Lord and the Disciples to have a powerful witness to preach the Gospel and the power of His resurrection. There where 2 men of great integrity as candidates Joseph and Matthias who did not strive for this place, but humbly sat still and where appointed to it! Here they applied by prayer for direction Acts 1:24 And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 25 to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” God knows the hearts of all men, which we do not and better than they know their own. Apostles were to be chosen by his heart, temper and disposition. How about Judas did Jesus make a mistake. No when God choices us we need to comply with God we are under His eye. We are accountable to God as the Lord shows us His will. We obey Him and we ae accepted by the brethren. Judas was not able to accept God will. Those who deny Christ and betray Christ fall for the dignity of relation to him, so they fall into all misery. Balaam in Numbers 24:25 So Balaam rose and departed and returned to his place; Balak also went his way. They went to hell according to their works. Remember He said of Judas it would have been better for you to not have been born. Judas was a hypocrite and hell is the proper place of such. Here the lot was cast and fell on Matthias, he was not chosen by hands placed upon him, but by lots cast to be numbered as an apostle. |
